Sedona is a hotbed of natural and cultural beauty. You could spend days upon days exploring the area and still not see everything of value. Within the city limits of Sedona, there are countless things to do and see. But there are also many opportunities for day trips just outside of Sedona. One of those trips consists of visiting the Honanki Heritage Site. This is a unique experience that you will not soon forget.

About the Honanki Heritage Site

Honanki means “badger house” in Hopi. This particular site is one of the largest red rock dwellings in the history of the area. It was inhabited around 1150 A.D. to 1350 A.D. The Honanki Indian ruins of this dwelling are simple, yet incredibly beautiful. The people who lived here were sustained by growing a few crops and hunting deer and rabbits. In this place, far away from the activity of the city, you can really put yourself in the shoes of those who lived here and be amazed at how beautiful life must have been in this incredible place. This lasting site of Honanki ruins truly is a one of a kind place.

Take Advantage

Today, the Honanki Heritage Site is not home for anyone, but it is open for the enjoyment of all. It offers a nice change of pace from visiting all of the natural wonders in Sedona, to see how people lived among these beautiful lands long ago. Simply exploring the area surrounding this former settlement is a great way to spend a day, but it is also the perfect place to spend a day having a picnic or viewing some of Sedona’s great wildlife. The site is a bit off the beaten path but is relatively easy to get to. It is to the west of the city. In order to get there, you should take highway 89A west for a bit over 5 miles. Upon reaching mile marker 365, take a right onto forest road 525 for about 10 miles. The park is open from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.

While it is difficult to narrow down a list of activities on any trip in Sedona, a visit to the Honanki Heritage Site is definitely one of the more worthwhile activities you can do. Make sure you plan your next trip to the wonderful area of Sedona and make the Honanki Heritage Site a part of your plans. You are sure to not soon forget this experience.
