Just half an hour southwest of Sedona, Tuzigoot National Monument is the ancient site of the three-story cluster of pueblo ruins, located one hundred and twenty feet above the Verde River floodplain. The name Tuzigoot was derived from the Apache phrase for “crooked waters,” referring to the nearby Pecks Lake.

First constructed around approximately 1000 A.D., Tuzigoot is a place where you can step back in time. Explore the nearly one hundred rooms of this pueblo, very few of which have doors; it is thought that the two hundred and fifty residents—from the Sinagua culture, named by archaeologists for the San Francisco Peaks, which were once described by the Spanish as “las montañas sin agua,” or mountains without water—entered and exited the rooms by the holes in the ceiling of each room, designed for protection from people or animals. In certain areas, permanent remnants of the Sinagua people can be seen in the form of petroglyphs dating back hundreds of years.
