Festive Christmas Events and Local Holiday Lights
One popular and beloved pastime is The Magical Christmas Journey aboard the Verde Canyon railroad Thursdays thru Saturdays in December. The experience begins at the train depot in nearby Clarkdale, where everything is decorated with festive little Christmas lights and holiday décor, and you can hear Santa’s elves telling stories. That’s followed up by a ride to the “North Pole,” where kids can meet Santa, and there are snacks and bar service on the train.
At the Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village, you can stroll throughout the hidden courtyards and take in their display of Christmas lights. This is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike, where year-round people come to enjoy the serene ambiance of the outdoor marketplace that features local artists and crafters. It’s the perfect spot to get one-of-a-kind gifts for everyone on your list.
Enjoy a Silent Night, Holy Night
Sedona is a truly unique community where people from all walks of life can gather together to celebrate. No matter your religion, your personal views, or your current views of faith, Sedona is a place where holy ground is sacred, and all are welcome to soak up the healing benefits of this special space. While many denominations of the churches can be found throughout the area, we also encourage you to visit some of our favorite holy grounds that thousands of visitors flock to every year.
Topping the list is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a distinguished church that sits atop the towering red rocks, making it recognizable around the world for its inherent beauty and pure defiance of gravity. The construction of this iconic church was completed in 1956, built to a twin pinnacled spur about 250 feet high, jutting out of a 1,000-foot rock wall, making it “solid as the rock of Peter.” While the church no longer practices a regular mass schedule at this location, visitors are encouraged to peruse the grounds in contemplative silence, soaking in the awe-inspiring artwork present throughout and even invited to light a candle in prayer. Conclude your tour with a visit to the gift shop where original pieces completed by local artists are on sale.
Another inspiring destination is the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park. Nestled into the beautiful red rocks at the foot of Thunder Mountain, the stunning architecture of this gorgeous park is adorned with colorful peace flags. The Amitabha stupa itself rises 36-feet into the air and is filled to the brim with sacred relics that line the interior. Though these relics are not visible to the naked eye, this structure is truly a vessel containing otherworldly powers. Long recognized as a holy ground by many of the native tribes in the area, Buddhists have also come to acknowledge this 14-acre park as a sacred space that holds the power of spiritual healing and transformation.
