What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican culture all over the world. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the larger French army at the Battle of Puebla in the Franco-Mexican War. It is a bigger holiday for the Mexican American community than it actually is in Mexico.
The war began when Mexico was unable to pay its debts to France, Spain, and Britain. Initially, all three countries attempted military action to get their money back, but Britain and Spain quickly withdrew. The French saw this as the perfect opportunity to colonize Mexico.
