Finding Balance in the New Year
As is always the case with ending one year and beginning a new one, this time of year is about finding closure and setting intentions for the new year. New Year’s Eve is always blooming with opportunities to go out and celebrate that evening, but the big countdown is just one small piece of the holiday. For guests looking to push their physical and mental capabilities in pursuit of inner and outer tranquility, we’ve assembled a list of activities that will definitely have you starting the new year off on the right foot.
Sedona Vortexes
While Sedona in its entirety is considered a vortex, there are actually four vortexes that have been identified to be the strongest in the area. For those unfamiliar, a vortex is an area on earth where there is a shift in energy, thought to be caused by an electromagnetic pull. People report feeling intensified emotions and some have a physical reaction such as lightheadedness and nausea. Native American tribes indigenous to the area have long honored this land, using it for sacred ceremonies because of its spiritual power. The four vortexes—Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Boynton Canyon—are not difficult to get to, though some are easier than others. You can schedule a tour of the vortexes for a guided approach or find them on your own.
Attainable Hikes for Every Skill Level
For hikers looking for an easy stroll that allows them to swim in their thought process along the way, we highly recommend Sedona View Trail which offers a relatively flat trail with minimal elevation gain. It does not, however, lack in views. Enjoy panoramic vistas of Chimney Rock, Coffee Pot Rock, and Thunder Mountain, all of which are fairly easy hikes in Sedona. With no hazardous cliffs to worry about, Sedona View Trail is great for families traveling with kids, furry four-legged family members, and the distracted ponderer. The trailhead can be accessed from the gravel parking lot on the left side of Airport Mesa Road across from the viewpoint. Another easy area to tackle is Fay Canyon, located 2.5 miles west of Sedona. The scenery here includes towering red sandstone walls and a natural arch, all with minimal climbing.
For the hikers looking for more of a challenge, ascend over 1,800 feet over the 2.3-mile (4.6 miles total with return) hike to the top of Bear Mountain on the challenging Bear Mountain Trail. The trail includes steep, rocky sections of switchbacks and a rocky 500-foot climb in a narrow side canyon that will literally have you searching for footing strongholds as you tackle giant boulders. False summits make you think you’ve almost made it to the end only to be challenged again with another climb. Once you’ve reached the summit, you will be treated with breathtaking panoramic views that include Arizona’s highest point, the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. Another challenge you might enjoy is the Wilson Mountain Trail. This trail climbs over 2,500 feet in 4.5 miles (9 miles total with return), with the terrain changing from rugged desert dotted with prickly pear cactus all the way to pine and oak forest. You’ll be rewarded with an overlook that provides panoramic views of Sedona’s red rocks and surrounding features including Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Coffee Pot Rock, Capitol Butte, Sterling Canyon, and the Verde Valley, all of which can be seen in views that extend over hundreds of square miles.
Stock Up on Humming Rocks to Bring Home with You
Sedona has long attracted the cosmically inclined and spiritually woke, so it will come as no surprise to you that there are multiple shops that specialize in bringing renewed energy to their patrons by way of mysticism, spiritualism, and environmentalism. Stock up on tools to guide your process, such as crystals, healing stones, literature, incense, oils, and so much more. Crystal Magic, Sedona Crystal Vortex, and Mystical Bazaar are all knowledgeable establishments ready to assist you on your journey.
Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park
Nestled into the beautiful red rocks at the foot of Thunder Mountain sits the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park. Adorned with colorful flags and easily identified by its stunning architecture, this precious space sprawls over a total of 14 acres of land. Long recognized by native tribes as holy ground, even Buddhists recognize this land as a sacred space that holds the power of spiritual healing and transformation. The Amitabha stupa itself rises 36 feet into the air and was named for the Buddha of Limitless Light known as Amitabha. This stupa was constructed to represent hope and light for all who visit and inhabit the world over. It is the perfect space to sit in silence and reflect on your past, present, and future; to reflect on who you are and who you are becoming.
Chapel of the Cross
Known for its towering beauty atop the red rock cliffs above Sedona, this iconic church provides the perfect quiet space to reflect on the outgoing year and welcome in the new. Inside you will find breathtaking original artwork that magnifies the beauty of the surrounding area. Should you feel inspired, we encourage you to visit the gift shop, which sells original artwork created by local artists, providing a souvenir that is sure to inspire you for many years to come.
