Immerse Yourself in the Picturesque Beauty of the Heart of the Navajo Nation!

If you’re willing to trade one beautiful locale for another, it’s more than worth it to make the three and a half to four-hour drive northeast of Sedona’s rust-hued rocks and explore the gorgeous landscape of Canyon de Chelly in Chinle, Arizona. This incredible area is also about two hours southwest of the famous Four Corners Monument, for those who are feeling ambitious enough to explore both areas in a single day.

The Canyon de Chelly National Monument has been the awe-inspiring home of the Navajo for nearly five thousand years, which is the longest that any civilization has lived continuously on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo people still make their homes, farm the lands, and raise livestock amongst these canyons, working actively with the National Park Service to manage the resources of the park.

In the Canyon de Chelly (or “The Place Called Tseyi’” in the Navajo language of Diné Bizaad), you can go on scenic drives, self-guided hikes, ranger-led programs that include informational hikes, tours of the canyon with the aid of an authorized guide from a private, permitted company, and camp at the Cottonwood Campground.

Depending on the time you allot yourself, there are a number of different overlooks and trails that you can visit. If you only have two hours, you can potentially take the South Rim Drive and see its seven overlooks, or take the North Rim Drive and see its three overlooks. If you have half of a day, you can visit all ten overlooks on the North and South Rim Drive, hike White House Trail, or take a half-day tour of the canyon. Visitors with one full day free can see all ten overlooks and hike White House Trail or take a half-day canyon tour, or explore the canyon on an all-day tour. If you have two days to spare, you’ll want to see all ten overlooks, hike the White House Trail, and go on an all-day tour of the canyon.
