The Sedona Arts Center was first established in 1958 under the name “Canyon Kiva” by a group of local artists that included Egyptian sculptor Nassan Gobran. With a vision of founding a place where artists could develop their talent together and work in a creative space, Gobran and the other co-founders purchased what was formerly the Jordan Apple Packing Barn (now known as the Art Barn). This spot became the creative and social hub of the community in a short span of time, re-opening in 1961 as the Sedona Arts Center. The center has gone through a number of changes over the years, including the addition of a new building that holds classrooms, an art gallery, and a community theatre.
Since its inception, the Sedona Arts Center has focused on the creative development of its attendees, which it now primarily accomplishes through its education program in the School of the Arts, which cater to artists of all ages and skill levels. It is also one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in Northern Arizona, committed to preserving an environment of sharing, learning, and discovery through the arts.
