Explore the Verde Canyon Railroad

HomeCheck Out the Top Sedona AttractionsExplore the Verde Canyon Railroad

The Verde River Valley, within which lies the desert mountain town of Sedona, is replete with otherworldly rock formations, lush forests, and a vast array of wildlife. This stunning landscape is best characterized by Verde Canyon, which is only accessible by train via the historic Verde Canyon Railroad, called Arizona’s longest-running nature show as it spans over the course of twenty miles and one hundred years of history.

Travel in Vintage Luxury

The journey begins at the authentic historic train depot, located just forty minutes outside of Sedona. Here, you can read the informational signage about the area, grab a bite to eat or sip on a drink at the Copper Spike Café, or examine the Verde Canyon Railroad exhibits at the John Bell Museum.

Board the train and step back in time as you ride in the luxury and comfort of the restored vintage train cars, pulled by two of only ten remaining FP7 locomotives in North America. Caboose, first-class, and coach cars are available for you to choose from, as well as access to open-air train cars with shaded canopies.

Coach has a number of old-fashioned Pullman-style seats reminiscent of the early days of train travel, as well as a snack bar for the convenience of passengers. First-Class accommodates fewer passengers than Coach, with living room-style seating, wide windows, a champagne toast upon boarding, complimentary appetizers, and a full-service cash bar.

Finally, the Caboose holds one private party of no more than six adults, who can enjoy the lavish amenities of large picture windows, oversized chairs, cupola seating, and private outdoor viewing platforms. Additionally, premium alcoholic beverages are available for purchase, and a personal valet serves appetizers and complimentary Champagne.

During your journey, you can observe the striking natural panorama of Verde Canyon, from its rust-hued valleys and cliffs to the glistening waters of the winding Verde River, to its wild denizens—including the regal Saguaro cactus, the stately Bald Eagle, and the majestic Blue Heron. Tour guides are also available onboard for narration and insight into the canyon’s sights, which highlight a stark contrast between the harsh desert and the precious, fertile area along the river.
