Take in the Views at Airport Mesa
Airport Mesa is one of Sedona’s most iconic spots for panoramic views. Just a short drive from town, this scenic overlook gives you a full sweep of the red rock formations Sedona is famous for. I’ve seen people come here all day, but sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit. You can see the changing colors of the rocks, the shadows stretching across the valley, and the whole town glowing in golden light. It’s also a popular vortex site, so don’t be surprised if you see people meditating or doing yoga while you’re there.
That said, the small parking lot at the trailhead fills up fast. For the best experience, arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset or use the larger paid parking lot further up at the airport.
Hike Cathedral Rock Trail
Sedona is packed with beautiful trails, and one of the most well-known is Cathedral Rock. The trail is short but steep, and you will get some of the most rewarding views around. Once you reach the saddle, you’ll understand why it’s such a popular hike. The views out toward Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte are picture perfect, and the climb itself is a fun challenge. If you want something more relaxed, you can start from the Baldwin Trailhead and hike along Oak Creek for a more mellow experience.
Note that the parking lot at the Cathedral Rock trailhead is closed Thursday through Sunday (and during busy weeks). During these times, you must use the free Sedona Shuttle from the North State Route 179 park-and-ride.
Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is both a religious site and an architectural marvel. Built right into the red rock cliffs, this unique chapel offers incredible views and a peaceful place to reflect. There’s no charge to visit, and you don’t need to be religious to appreciate the design and setting. I recommend stepping inside for a few quiet moments and then taking a walk around the outside to soak in the views. The surrounding landscape is beautiful, and it’s a great place to stop on your way to other nearby trails.
Cool Off at Oak Creek
During the warmer months, Oak Creek is a local favorite. Whether you want to wade in the water, lounge on the banks, or explore the shaded trails that follow the creek, it’s the perfect place to take a break. Red Rock Crossing is one of the best access points. It’s where the classic postcard view of Cathedral Rock reflecting in the water was taken. You can bring a picnic, dip your feet in the creek, and enjoy the cooler temps under the trees. It’s peaceful, scenic, and free.
While many creek access points are free with a Red Rock Pass, note that entering through Crescent Moon Picnic Site requires a separate $12 per-vehicle fee.
Wander Through Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village
Even if you’re not in the mood to shop, Tlaquepaque is worth a stroll. This open-air village was designed to feel like a traditional Mexican plaza, and it’s full of art galleries, sculptures, fountains, and winding stone pathways. You can spend an hour or two just walking around and admiring the work of local artists. There’s often live music or small events happening throughout the year. It’s a beautiful, quiet space that invites you to slow down and just enjoy the atmosphere.
Discover the Vortex Sites
Sedona is known for its energy vortexes, and whether or not you buy into the spiritual side, the spots themselves are worth visiting. Bell Rock, Boynton Canyon, Airport Mesa, and Cathedral Rock are all considered major vortex sites. People come from around the world to meditate, practice yoga, or just enjoy the stillness in these areas. You don’t need a guide or a pass. Just show up, walk the trail, and see what you feel. Even if you don’t pick up on the energy, the views alone are reason enough to go.
Pro tip: To keep Sedona beautiful, stay on marked trails to protect the fragile cryptobiotic soil and always carry at least one gallon of water per person during summer hikes.

Mornings Are for Outdoor Fun This August in Sedona
Even we locals can feel the afternoon heat is a little much, and as such, if we want to play outdoors, we do so in the morning hours, sometimes even waking early to enjoy our favorite activities. (A siesta after lunch will help refresh your flailing energy) Below, we have listed some of our favorite August morning activities, so feel free to peruse at your leisure.
Slide Rock State Park, 6871 AZ-89A
If you follow Sedona.Org, you know we love Slide Rock. This swimming hole has cooled locals since the Pendley family settled here over a century ago. It features an 80 foot natural chute where the water stays a crisp 65°F to 75°F even during the peak of summer. An early visit ensures you beat the crowds and enjoy that chilly mountain water.
Beyond the creek, you can wander past the 1933 tourist cabins and the historic apple orchards. Since the harvest typically begins late in the month, you might spot ripening fruit on the 300 original trees as you explore the grounds on a cool August morning.
Shopping Adventures in Sedona
Visit Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village to see local craftsmen at work. For a quieter local experience, head to West Sedona shops along Highway 89A, which often have more parking than the busy Uptown area. As locals, we may not hit all the shops you will during your visit, but we do like to fill our homes with local art, décor items, and of course, crystals and other spiritual items.
The shops will be air conditioned but dipping in and out of the heat can be tiring, so do your shopping in the morning and save your afternoons for the fun activities we suggest in the next paragraphs.
Chillin’ in the Afternoons
August afternoons in Sedona are ripe with possibility, offering a wonderful variety of ways to stay cool as the sun beats down from overhead. We locals don’t hibernate in August per se, we simply find alternatives to being outdoors, and below we have listed some of our favorite August afternoon adventures.
Scenic Drives and Ice Cream Cones
As the air conditioning in our cars works extremely well, we often take afternoon drives, exploring the towns around us. Additionally, we have learned that Rabia LLC Old Town Market, 802 N Main Street in Cottonwood, #1 Sandwich Shop, 755 AZ-89A in Clarkdale, and Timberline Ice Cream, 2710 N Steve’s Boulevard in Flagstaff, all have yummy ice cream that helps us cool down on the hottest days. They provide us a destination spot on our random drives, but if we don’t want to go that far but still want a sweet and frosty treat, Rocky RD Ice Cream Co, 2055 AZ-89A right here in Sedona, is the doorstep we often find ourselves standing at!
Cold Beer, Arizona Wines, and a Good Meal
When it is just too hot to play outside, sipping a cold beer at Oak Creek Brewery and Grill, 336 AZ-179, a good wine at Winery 1912, 320 AZ-89A, or enjoying a fantastic meal at the Hideaway House, 213 AZ-179, gives us amnesia over the weather. The winery and the restaurant are famed for their stunning views, you can still enjoy the beauty of the landscape while staying cool, and the Brewery is in the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, so you may find yourself dipping into some of the stores while there!
The Coolest Spot of All
Your Sedona.Org summer sanctuary may be the coolest spot of all, offering luxury amenities that may include pools, hot tubs, and home theater rooms, and comfortable furnishings that encourage long sessions of dedicated laziness! Reserve your favorite seasonal retreat today and discover all the ways our homes will be where many of your vacation dreams come true.
